My Alzheimer's Journey
Part 52 - Fun Friday December 12
It is FRIDAY! Today, I take a break from talking about Alzheimer’s disease and my journey. Instead, let’s relax and take a look back in history. I also have a few suggestions for Christmas events you can attend.
On this day in 1980, Apple had it’s initial stock offering. For about the price of the Original 5 Napkin Burger in New York City, you could have bought one share of Apple. That’s right, the hamburger costs $21.50 and the stock was issued at $22. Apple shares are valued at $229 today. If you bought one share of Apple in 1980, you would have 224 shares today. This is because Apple split its stock five times throughout its 44-year history as a publicly traded company. That share you bought in 1980 is worth $50,176 today.
The number that really gets me is 54.69 Billion. This is the cash and cash equivalents that Apple has in its back pocket today. If Apple gave one percent of that cash to Alzheimer’s research, a lot of promising scientific studies would move forward and get us closer to a cure. Come on, Tim Cook cough up some cash for the greater good.
Are you looking for a bit of Christmas Spirit this weekend?
You can head to Charleston, South Carolina for the Festival of Lights. Or, you can catch the English National Ballet performance of the Nutcracker in London. Another option is to head to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin and catch the last weekend of the Old World Christmas Market. My best suggestion is to at stay home, do a tad bit of shopping at local small businesses, and enjoy hot chocolate (or an Apple Cider Hot Toddy) while watching classic Christmas movies.
I have one more event to tell you about. December 24 in Cocoa Beach, Florida is the annual Surfing Santas event. You can spend the day among about 10,000 people and watch 800 surfing Santas. Best of all, this is a charity event with a large portion of the proceeds going to Grind for Life, a charity benefiting people suffering from cancer.
Linda and I will be hanging out at home with the cats this weekend. I hope all of you have a great weekend no matter where you are or what you are doing.
Thank you again for your support.
