One of the realities of healthcare in America is that it is expensive. Stupid expensive.
I am fortunate that most of my actual medical treatment will be covered by Medicare and insurance. What isn’t covered are all the related expenses (travel, housing, meals, tissues for wiping tears away, etc). My wife and I have been carefully calculating the cost of these related expenses over the next eighteen months (or longer.)
It seems like moving to Durham is the most economical and practical thing for us to do. We are planning to rent our house, pack our furniture, load the cats in their carriers, and head up I-85 to the Bull City.
This means finding a tenant for our house, renting an apartment in Durham, and a myriad of other details. All of this must be done in about three weeks.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve held onto this hope that everyone has good intentions. That there is still kindness in the world. Sometimes the widespread divisiveness driven by political polarization, the raw hatred that many express toward others simply because they don’t agree with the current President, and rising racism makes it difficult for me to see the kindness.
Today, we not only saw kindness, we experienced it. And, we are overjoyed.
Without us asking, several people (friends, family, and business associates) have eased our burden. Someone forgave a business loan, a friend is going to rent our town house, and family members are coving all of our relocation expenses plus many months of apartment rental.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank each of you kind and generous people.
