Memory is how your brain holds onto information, experiences, and skills so you can use them later. It acts like a combination of a filing cabinet, a workspace, and a video recorder. Our short-term, or working, memory holds onto tiny bits of information for just a few seconds or minutes. Long-term memory stores memories for days, years, or a lifetime.
It is fascinating that our memory doesn’t have a timer function. I remember details of where I was and what I was doing when the United States was attacked on September 11, 2001; and it seems like yesterday.
This morning, Linda and I discussed how the 9/11 attacks are being taught in American schools. Are factual accounts taught, or are schools creating a narrative based on political ideology? In my opinion, the many stories of American bravery are the most important thing that should be taught, honored, and remembered.
Shifting gears to a few other topics:
Someone posted on Reddit last night, “Why do people pay for subscriptions (on Substack)?” The discussion was both interesting and concerning. The original poster (OP) and a few commenters truly believe that writers and content creators should not charge a subscription fee or ask for donations. I could not keep my trembling hands away from the keyboard. I asked the OP if he got free coffee at his local coffee shop. The concept is the same: if the coffee shop provides a beverage that has value, you have to pay the shop for that value. If a Substack content creator provides an article or produces a video that has value to you, you should pay the creator. The OP did not respond, although my question is getting upvotes.
Also on Reddit at three this morning was a discussion about Vielight. This is a company that manufactures red and near-infrared light therapy devices to treat Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injuries. The technology is fascinating - yet, it lacks the safety assurances and therapeutic promises that only phase three clinical studies can offer. There is no paywall if you are interested in learning more about Vielight.
The average price of diesel fuel in the United States crossed the $6 per gallon mark today. To be blunt, this scares me tremendously. When diesel prices increase, so do the prices of almost all consumer products.
